"EVOLVING STYLES AND TRENDS IN FLORAL DESIGNS"
The Greensboro Council of Garden Clubs will present "Evolving Styles and Trends in Floral Designs" on Saturday, March 28, 2020, at Starmount Forest Country Club.
The event will feature Laura Dowling, Chief Floral Designer for The White House from 2009 to 2015 and owner of L'Art du Bouquet in Alexandria, VA. A native of Chehalis, WA, Ms. Dowling received a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science and master's degree in public administration from the University of Washington in Seattle. Prior to her White House assignment, she was Senior Manager of Strategic Communications at The Nature Conservancy. Her unique approach to floral designs focuses on the premise that flowers can be more than just decorative objects, conveying important diplomatic messages, cultural meaning and symbolic metaphor. She is known for her contemporary and romantic style of flower arrangement, featuring a free interplay between flowers, floral boughs and branches, berried twigs and leafy vines, combined with more formally designed bouquets.
Two local floral designers will join Ms. Dowling. Stacy Curtis, of The Farmer's Wife Antiques in downtown Greensboro, began practicing floral design in 1987, at Plants & Answers. An artist at heart, searching for her medium, she found it there and went on to learn from some of the best designers in Greensboro. She joined the Farmer's Wife in 2002 and has developed an honed her style there for seventeen years. Ms. Curtis' designs feature interesting elements that one might find on a walk through the forest combined with flowers and other unusual plant materials.
Cindy Tole, owner of Botanica Flowers and Gifts in north Greensboro, has over forty years of floral industry experience. She attended the American Floral Arts School in Chicago, the Phil Rulloda School of Floral Design in Phoenix, Gregor Lersch's "Forward Reflections" in Asheville, NC, and Teleflora's Commentating School. Her passion is the challenge of running a profitable small business that not only provides a service to her community, but gives her the opportunity to spread the beauty and joy that giving and receiving flowers brings. Her designs have been featured in various publications.
These artists will provide commentary and demonstrations of their designs. The program begins at 10 AM and should conclude by 3:30 PM. Tickets include a sit down lunch. Registration runs through March 10, 2020. Seating is limited.
